How gold moves through rivers, dry creeks, and dry rivers — and where to look when you get there.

Where gold settles

Gold is about 19× denser than water. In any moving stream it drops out where velocity drops — behind obstacles, on inside bends, and into cracks in bedrock.

The same rules apply in dry creeks and dry rivers: when water last ran, it left gold in the same trap sites. You just dig without a pan full of water — or haul water / drywash.

  • Inside bends and point bars (slow water)
  • Downstream side of boulders and bedrock ribs
  • Plunge pools below small waterfalls or rapids
  • Confluences where a side creek dumps into a larger stream
  • False bedrock (clay layers) under loose gravel
  • Cracks, crevices, and potholes in true bedrock

Desert and seasonal gold country

Dry creeks & dry rivers

Dry washes are not empty. Flash floods and seasonal flow rework paydirt, then leave it exposed. Arizona, Nevada, and parts of California and Oregon are classic dry-placer ground.

Work exposed bedrock in the wash bottom, caliche-bound gravel banks, and the heads of alluvial fans where velocity first drops.

  • Never enter a wash during or right after storms
  • Metal detect ironstone, quartz float, and caliche edges
  • Drywash clay-bound gravel; classify first
  • Look for purple/rose quartz and black sand streaks
  • After monsoons, new gold often moves into the same traps

Classic wet placer technique

Live rivers

Perennial rivers rebuild bars every high-water season. Scout after spring runoff when new gravel is loose and gold has just been re-sorted.

Coarse gold stays close to source and hugs bedrock. Fine “flour” gold travels farther and needs careful cleanup gear.

  • Classify gravel before panning to speed recovery
  • Work the head of a gravel bar and the inside bend
  • Clean bedrock with a crevicing tool + snuffer
  • Know claim boundaries — BLM, Forest Service, state maps
  • Cold water: waders and a partner for safety

From lode to landscape

How gold disperses

Lode (hard-rock) gold weathers out of veins into residual soil, then into colluvium, gulches, creeks, and finally major rivers. Each step spreads gold farther but usually in smaller pieces.

Maps in Goldvein highlight dispersion corridors — the drainages most likely to have collected gold from known or likely source rocks.

  • Near source: coarser gold, residual & gulch placers
  • Mid-system: mixed flake gold in creeks and dry washes
  • Far field: fine gold in big rivers and beaches (e.g. Nome)
  • Ancient channels & high benches can hold richer paleo-placers
  • Glacial and hydraulic mining reworked huge volumes of paydirt

Methods that work

Panning is the foundation. Sluices and highbankers multiply volume where legal. Drywashers own the desert. Detectors find nuggets and help locate ironstone trains.

Stay legal, stay welcome

Access & the law

Public land is not automatically open to mining. Claims, wilderness rules, suction-dredge bans, and state stream regulations all apply. Goldvein sites are educational starting points — always verify on official maps before digging.

  • Check BLM LR2000 / MLRS for federal claims
  • National Forest and BLM district offices post local rules
  • State parks and private land often ban collecting
  • Suction dredging is heavily restricted in many states
  • Fill holes, pack out trash, respect cultural sites

Field signs of paydirt

Reading the ground

Black sand (magnetite, hematite) often travels with gold. Clay layers act as false bedrock. Rounded cobbles with flattened bottoms can mark old channel floors.

  • Black sand streaks = test that material carefully
  • Purple/rose quartz can signal Mother Lode–type ground
  • Ironstone & hematite float — good detecting targets
  • Old hydraulic pits and dredge tailings = historic pay nearby
  • High benches and terraces = ancient river levels

Gold is optional; getting home is not

Field safety

Remote creeks, desert heat, cold rivers, and wildlife are the real hazards. Tell someone your plan. Carry water, navigation, and a way to call for help.

  • Desert: start at dawn, 1+ gallon water per person
  • Rivers: footholds, waders, never alone in current
  • Mountains: weather windows and altitude
  • Bears/snakes: regional awareness and first aid
  • Always: map offline, headlamp, whistle, basic first aid
